About Us

Protei started as a running set of notes on sailing robots, ocean drones and the sensors people use to watch the water, and it grew into a small site built around the same questions: does this autopilot hold a course in real chop, does this water-quality probe drift after a week in salt water, and can an ordinary person actually build the thing from the parts list.

The team favors open-source designs and off-the-shelf electronics over closed commercial systems, mostly because open hardware can be taken apart, measured, and fixed instead of just trusted. When a guide recommends a part, it is usually because someone on staff either built with it, compared its spec sheet line by line against competitors, or found enough consistent reports from other builders to trust the pattern.

Coverage leans toward projects a motivated hobbyist or small research group could realistically finish: autonomous sailboats, low-cost ocean drones, DIY hull builds, and the sensors and microcontrollers that tie environmental monitoring projects together. Products that only make sense for large institutional budgets get mentioned for context but rarely get a full review.

Questions, corrections, and reports of parts that performed differently than described can be sent through the contact page; the team reads and responds to all of it.
